The 19,000-square foot Bonderson Project Center was funded by a private gift from Paul and Sandra Bonderson. A 1975 Cal Poly electrical engineering graduate, Paul completed his senior project in a garage. He wanted to provide campus space where future students could build their projects. The Center is the first building funded entirely by a private donor.
The Orfalea College of Business and the Orfalea Children’s Center are named after Paul Orfalea, the founder of Kinko’s. During a campus visit in 2000, Paul and Natalie Orfalea were impressed by Cal Poly’s unique learn-by-doing philosophy. Although they had no previous relationship to the university, Paul and Natalie were inspired to donate millions for the Orfalea College of Business and the ASI Children’s Center.
John and Gay Lau, owners of the Yosemite Meat Company in Modesto, provided generous support for the J & G Lau Family Meat Processing Center. The facility will provide a fully functional USDA inspected meat plant and will help prepare students for this important industry.
Alex G. Spanos, drum major for the Mustang Marching Band in 1941, pledged a significant gift for the completion of Spanos Stadium. After a nostalgic visit to the field he marched on 63 years before, he decided it needed “sprucing up.”
Each year the M.H. Sherman Co. gives Haskell Scholarship recipients a full scholarship and internship at the Sherman Library and Gardens in Corona del Mar. Established in honor of the company founder Arnold D. Haskell, the scholarships advance environmental horticulture education in California.
Since 2000, the Mary Stuart Rogers Foundation Scholarship program has awarded 25 scholarships annually to recipients who exhibit academic excellence, personal integrity, leadership, and dedication to community service.
Heidelberg USA gifted a four-color press to Cal Poly to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Graphic Communications Department. The new four-color digital printer is being used by classes and the department’s student-run printing and publishing enterprise, as well as in industry seminars and workshops.
Ken Edwards, CEO of the Dunn-Edwards Corporation, gave a generous gift to support the Kenneth N. Edwards Western Coatings Technology Center which will provide laboratories and space for industry-sponsored research in the Polymer and Coatings Science Program to be housed in the new Center for Science and Mathematics.
Private donations from industry leaders has made Cal Poly’s Construction Management Building one of the most technologically advanced buildings on campus. The facility houses industry-sponsored labs explicitly designed for hands-on learning in construction education.
