Ratcliffe died suddenly of a cerebral hemorrhage on September 21, 1989 at the age of 55. He was born February 1, 1934. Ratcliffe was a well liked music teacher at Cal Poly as well as a skilled harpsichordist. His career at Cal Poly spanned 26 years and at the time of his death, he was teaching piano, music theory, and the history of keyboard instruments. He had just finished a book called Steinway about the Steinway family and their famous pianos. Ratcliffe also spearheaded the London Study program. He graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelor’s degree in music and earned his master’s degree in harpsichord performance from USC. He was survived by his wife and his three married children. The Ronald V. Ratcliffe Memorial Award is presented to students of outstanding achievement in the music program. |

The Willard “Pete” Pederson Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Willard who was a Navy “Frogman” (what is now known as the Navy Seals) with the rank of lieutenant in WWII. He won three Silver Stars, the third highest award for gallantry behind the Medal of Honor, and the Navy Cross. The scholarship supports upper-class English majors.
