Poly Gives 2025 Challenge Gifts — College of Engineering

College of Engineering trio - Poly Gives

At the College of Engineering, our students and alumni are renowned for their hands-on approach to solving problems, thinking creatively, and making a lasting impact on science, society, and industry. This success stems from learning experiences that foster innovation and develop the next generation of professionals and leaders.

This Poly Gives, the college has two exciting challenges and dollar-for-dollar gift matching! Read on for more:

Earn By Doing: Computing Tutors, Techs and TAS - $25,000 Match

Patrick Hanlon (Mechanical Engineering, '92) is matching gifts to the Earn by Doing: Computing Tutors, Techs, and TAs program, up to $25,000!

Hanlon said he knows firsthand the power of a Learn by Doing education, and he’s committed to helping the next generation of engineers and computer scientists build their own paths to success.

The Earn by Doing: Computing Tutors, Techs, and TAs program gives students the chance to gain real-world experience through paid positions — roles that not only teach essential skills but also foster a stronger grasp of the material through peer teaching and practical engagement.

“Cal Poly students are ready from Day One. And when they're working in the lab or teaching their peers, they learn that content better,” he said. “Plus, for those who need it, it’s a form of financial aid. Everyone is learning from each other.”

Give the gift of work experience to the next generation of doers!

Hangar Infrastructure Renovation - $15,000 CHallenge

It’s been decades since George Cattey (Mechanical Engineering, '65) last worked with pipe or fittings, but his connection to Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing ethos remains strong. Although he didn’t spend time in the Hangar during his own college years, he understands its importance for today’s students.

“I owe my whole future to Cal Poly as I see it,” Cattey said. “If someone is successful, that means someone helped them along the way. I had people who did that for me.”

That sense of gratitude continues to shape his legacy. In the lead-up to this year’s Poly Gives fundraising campaign, George and his wife, Linda, are inspiring others to step up with a $15,000 challenge gift to support the renovation of the Hangar machine shop.
